As part of updating the information of flagship indicator species, CSUWN and KTWR teamed together to undertake the census of Wild Water Buffalo in KTWR. The first census to establish the baseline for the project was conducted in the year 2009, where a total of 219 individuals were recorded. This year's census was carried out from 15th to 17th March 2012 after an interval of four years with the involvement of over 40 personnel comprising of Reserve staffs, Army personnel, Buffer Zone Members, local communities and CSUWN staffs. A total of 259 individuals have been recorded with an increase of 18% as compared to the census of 2009. CSUWN provided financial support to undertake this initiative. The census results of this year were shared amongst a special gathering on 22nd March by KTWR authorities.     

Wild Water Buffalo is listed as an endangered species according to IUCN Red List and is protected species according to Nepal's National Park and Wildlife Conservation Act, 1973. Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve holds the last remaining population of this species in Nepal.
